UAAP Season 73 1st Round
UP Fighting Maroons vs UE Red Warriors
UE wins 59-54
Another chance for UP to finally nail its first win but another heartbreaking loss as Paul Lee led UE to a win vs the Maroons, 59-54. With UE holding just a 2pt lead 56-54, Paul Lee made a step back three pointer to give UE a five point lead 59-54 and eventually UP missing its last few attempts as they fell down 0-5 in the current UAAP Season 73.
It was a very close game as the two teams exchanged baskets in the 4th quarter, but UE made 3 consecutive 3-point shots at the end of the 4th quarter, 1 by Paul Zamar and 2 by Paul Lee including the step back three pointer.
Rookie Mike Silungan led UP with 20pts including a three pointer to cut UE lead to 2, 56-54. It was only Magi Sison as the other UP player who had double digits in scoring with 11pts. UP was missing the services of Woody Co (but still in uniform in this game), who had a knee injury in their last game against UST.

UE 59 – Lee 23, Martinez 10, Acibar 6, Casajeros 5, Razon 4 Ayala 4, Zamar 3, Enguio 2, Reyes 2, Tagarda 0, Duran 0.

UP Fighting Maroons vs. University of the East Red Warriors
UE wins 77-69
Aug 6, 2009, 2pm
Araneta Coliseum
UP had a chance to seal the win in regulation, but Rookie Alvin Padilla missed 1 of 2 free throws with UP leading by 3 points with 9 seconds left. Then Acuna of UE beat the buzzer with a 3 point shot and tied the game at 65, sending the game into overtime.
In the extra period, it was all UE as veteran Elmer Espiritu took over the game, leading UE to a 77-69 win over the maroons. Woody Co led UP with 23 points, but could not lead UP to its second win and ties NU and Adamson at the bottom of the standings.
Although the loss is heartbreaking, it was a big improvement from last year, specially versus UE, where they lost to UE by 30 points. Hoping UP bounces back this saturday against UST for their final game of the 1st round. Game time will be 4pm at the Araneta Coliseum.
Please support the UP Fighting Maroons!
