After a big win by the UP Fighting Maroons against the FEU Tamaraws last Thursday, UP lost its shooting touch and had a big loss against the UST Growling Tigers, 68-49. No UP player scored in double figures with Jelo Montecastro leading UP with 9 points and Mike Silungan with 8 points.

Jett Manuel who led UP against FEU with 20 points only contributed 5 points.

UP defeats FEU after 7 years

The last time UP won against FEU was in 2004 and the UP Fighting Maroons ended their 12 game losing streak against the FEU Tamaraws, 76-63, and notched their 2nd win in 5 games. 2nd year guard Jett Manuel from Xavier led the Maroons with 20 points (5/8 from the field and 9/11 from the free throw line).

Mike Silungan had an all-around game with 16 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists while CSB transferee Jelo Montecastro and Nigerian-Rookie Alinko Mbah both contributed 14 points in a big win for the Maroons.

Our prayer goes to one of the most avid supporters of the UP Fighting Maroons for many years, Tintin Gregorio-Macadaeg (only 34 yrs old), who passed away last Monday due to Breast Cancer. Another heartbreaking loss for the Maroons

UE wins 59-54

Another chance for UP to finally nail its first win but another heartbreaking loss as Paul Lee led UE to a win vs the Maroons, 59-54. With UE holding just a 2pt lead 56-54, Paul Lee made a step back three pointer to give UE a five point lead 59-54 and eventually UP missing its last few attempts as they fell down 0-5 in the current UAAP Season 73.

It was a very close game as the two teams exchanged baskets in the 4th quarter, but UE made 3 consecutive 3-point shots at the end of the 4th quarter, 1 by Paul Zamar and 2 by Paul Lee including the step back three pointer.

Rookie Mike Silungan led UP with 20pts including a three pointer to cut UE lead to 2, 56-54. It was only Magi Sison as the other UP player who had double digits in scoring with 11pts. UP was missing the services of Woody Co (but still in uniform in this game), who had a knee injury in their last game against UST.

EXPERIENCE HEAT CHECK MOMENTS IN THIS YEAR’S NCAA AND UAAP SEASON

Second year player Ron Pascual of the NCAA, San Sebastian College recalls vividly last season’s heat check moment as his team won the championship. He shares that “Focus and dedication were two of the main factors that lead their team to victory. I felt rewarded each time our team scored. Game 2 during the championships was the most exciting game last season.”

Also a second year player, Point Guard Kevin Alas of Letran promises to show leadership on and off court to make this season more exciting. “I will do my best by focusing on defense to challenge our opponents and try make things more exciting this season.”

Jeric Teng of the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) won’t forget the thrilling feeling he had as he makes the first score in of his matches against the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons last season. “For me, that was the start of excitement in that game. I am also looking forward to UAAP Season 73. With passion and motivation, I will also help lead my team, especially the freshmen, to win this season”

For rookies of the De La Salle Green Archers Luigi de la Paz and Mike Silungan of The UP Fighting Maroons, both are looking forward to a fun and intense UAAP Season. For first timers in the UAAP, they simply both want to give their best for an intense season. La Salle defeats UP

La Salle wins 80-62

A close game in the 1st half turned ugly for the UP Fighting Maroons in the second half as the La Salle Green Archers pulled away in the 3rd and 4th quarters to win in the 1st game of the UAAP Season 73. UP committed 21 turnovers in the game and most of their shots were from the three-point range, only former Rookie of the Year Woody Co who contributed 17 points got inside the paint a couple of times.

Rookie Mike Silungan scored 17 points but committed 6 turnovers in his UAAP debut after two years of waiting for his residency. The Veterans specially Magi Sison and Martin Reyes who are playing in their last year in the UAAP had a subpar performance along with second year players Mikee Reyes, Alvin Padilla and Mark Juruena.

The only bright spot for the game were the other rookies Jett Manuel and Joshua Saret who contributed 5pts and 2pts respectively but showed potential in their limited time in the court. UP also missed 12 free throws (15 of 27) and shot only 31 percent from the field. We hope UP bounces back from this game vs Adamson this Saturday, July 17, 4pm at the Philsports Arena.

Rookie Nigerian Center Alinko Mbah (who is eligible to play next year in the UAAP-unless there are rule changes with the new commissioner) contributed 14pts, 9rebs, 4asts and 4stls, rookie sensation Mike Silungan scored only 13 pts but led UP in the 4th quarter and rookie point guard Joshua Saret ( scored 89pts in an NCAA juniors game last year) had 11pts, all led UP to a win vs Letran in the 2010 FilOil Flying V Preseason Tournament. Another rookie Jett Manuel from Xavier also made his appearance scoring 3 points.

UP now has a 3-2 record.

With only 7 players available in their first game, the UP Fighting Maroons gave San Beda Red Lions a scare making the game close in the last quarter but San Beda held on to win 70-61. Next UAAP Season Rookie Mike Silungan led UP with 25 points, followed by Veteran Magi Sison with 13 points and a surprise player for UP Rookie Joshua Saret with 9 points and 7 assists.

The core of the UP Fighting Maroons were missing including Woody Co, Alvin Padilla and Mikey Reyes due to an injury or school commitments.

For those who do not know, Joshua Saret was the player who broke the Juniors NCAA Record last year for points, scoring 89 points in a single game for JRU. Jett Manual is also one of the prized rookies for the UP Fighting Maroons from champion team Xavier, also missed the game.
