FEU wins 70-48

Some notes from the game:

- Alvin Padilla top scored for UP with 17pts

Last game will be this Saturday, 2pm vs UE, as UP avoids another 0-14 season in the UAAP which they also had in 2007, let us all support our team in their last game. 4th quarter collapse gives UST a win over UP

UAAP Season 73 Round 2
UP Fighting Maroons vs UST Growling Tigers
UST wins 68-66

The UP Fighting Maroons led for three quarters but a 4th quarter collapse snapped the losing streak of the UST Growling Tigers. The turnaround started when back-to-back unsportsmanlike fouls were called against Magi Sison and Mark Juruena which gave UST 4 free throws and ball possessions for both infractions thus giving the Tigers a wider cushion in the 4th quarter until Mike Silungan and Alvin Padilla both made 3-point shots to trim the lead to 1, 67-66 but time ran out for the Maroons as UP fouled Jeric Teng with no time left making 1 free throw to make the final score, 68-66.

Another sorry loss for UP with 2 games left, against No. 1 FEU, who lost to La Salle a while ago and UE, who beat Ateneo last thursday. UP had great ball rotation in the 1st 3 quarters as many players scored led by Martin Reyes, Alvin Padilla and Carlo Gomez with 12 pts each and Magi Sison and Mark Juruena both contributing 8 points.

Game Scores:

UST 68 – Teng 17, Mariano 11, Camus 11, Fortuna 10, Bautista 6, Afuang 6, Pe 5, Mamaril 2, Marata 0, Lo 0, Daquioag 0, Aytona 0.

UP 66 – Martin Reyes 12, Padilla 12, Gomez 12, Sison 8, Juruena 8, Mikee Reyes 6, Silungan 5, Hipolito 3, Saret 0, Pascual 0, Maniego 0.

Quarters: 14-14, 26-31, 45-51, 68-66.

4 starters out as Adamson defeats UP

UAAP Season 73 Round 2
UP Fighting Maroons vs Adamson Falcons
Adamson wins 74-51

No Mike Silungan (Flu), Alvin Padilla (Suspension), Woody Co (Ankle Injury) and Mark Lopez (ACL Injury), no win for UP as Adamson crushes the Maroons 74-51. The only bright spot for this game was Magi Sison who led UP with 20 points and 17 rebounds.

All players were used as UP was shorthanded for this game scoring only 9pts and 7pts in the 1st and 2nd quarters. UP cut down the lead to 17 in the 3rd quarter with their good defense which led to a couple of steals, but Adamson could not be stopped and is on their way to the Final Four.

Happy Birthday to Moriah Gingerich!

Game scores:

Adamson 74 – Nuyles 14, Cabrera 13, Cañada, 12, Lozada 11, Colina 6, Manyara 4, Camson 4, Etrone 3, Monteclaro 2, Galinato 2, Stinnett 0, Olalia 0, Brondial 0.

UP 51 – Sison 20, Juruena 7, Ma Reyes 6, Maniego 6, Manuel 5, Mi Reyes 3, Saret 2, Gomez 2, Pascual 0, Evangelista 0, Hipolito 0, Gingerich 0.

Quarter scoring: 22-9, 43-16, 58-35, 74-51.

Another Bad News for the Maroons

Although the 2 referees in the UP vs NU game were suspended, Coach Boyet Fernandez was given a warning by Commissioner Ato Badolato for crossing the court after the buzzer but the bad news for the short-handed maroons is Alvin Padilla was slapped with another 1-game suspension for crossing the court and shouting invectives at the referees.

The UP Fighting Maroons next game will be against Adamson this Thursday, and 3 key players (Alvin Padilla, Woody Co and Mark Lopez) will be out as UP is trying to get its 1st win.

Recap of Last Week:

8/13 – Battle of Katipunan Part 2, Ateneo defeats UP and Alvin Padilla committed a technical foul at the end game which causes him to be suspended for 1 game.

8/19 – UP vs La Salle Round 2, DLSU beats UP and Woody Co (Ankle) and Mark Lopez (ACL) got injured in the game and will be out for the season

8/23 – Controversial loss by UP over NU, UP made a comeback but still came back short and UP put this game under protest.

Controversial loss by UP over NU

UAAP Season 73 Round 2
UP Fighting Maroons vs NU Bulldogs
NU wins 61-59

With Woody Co and Mark Lopez both out for the season due to injuries, the Fighting Maroons had a good game, making a big comeback with NU leading by 7 points with 51 seconds left, Alvin Padilla and Mike Silungan both made a three pointer to cut the lead to 1, 60-59 with 21 seconds left in the game but UP still came up short to get their 1st win in the current UAAP Season.

The end game was controversial as Coach Boyet Fernandez (now also Meralco Assistant Coach in the PBA) instructed the team to make an intentional lane violation in order for NU to make a free throw so that they can call a timeout with 1.2 seconds left. The lane violation was called 4 times until the referee decided not to call it anymore and Ponferrada intentionally missing the free throw and game was over.

Although UP did not commit a violation doing this because it is a loop hole in the rules that a lane violation and a miss free throw will result in another free throw no matter how many times it is called. Maybe they should review the rules and put a 3 lane violation technical foul rule but can only be added in the next season that is why UP made a protest after the game.

UP actually had the chance to win the game but 4th year player Dioboy Hipolito missed 2 free throws which could have given the Maroons as 1 point lead.

Game scores:

NU 61 – Mbe 21, Hermosisima 14, Ponferrada 8, Baloran 6, Khobuntin 3, Terso 3, Malanday 3, Ludovice 0, Javelona 0, Ignacio 0, Eriobu 0, Tungcul 0, Singh 0, Magat 0.

UP 59 – Silungan 17, Padilla 13, Sison 8, Ma Reyes 6, Hipolito 6, Juruena 4, Mi Reyes 3, Gomez 2, Saret 0, Pascual 0, Maniego 0.

Quarter scoring: 11-15, 20-28, 44-42, 61-59.

Alvin Padilla suspended for one game

Alvin Padilla is suspended for 1 game for elbowing Rookie Art Dela Cruz of Ateneo in the blow out loss of the UP Fighting Maroons against the Blue Eagles last saturday. Padilla will miss the game vs La Salle this Thursday.

2 other players from FEU and NU was also slapped a one game suspension, Reil Cervantes (FEU) and Glenn Khobuntin (NU).

“All three players committed their second unsportsmanlike foul, so it’s an automatic suspension,” league commissioner Ato Badolato said yesterday. “There will be a more serious penalty for a third offense, probably a two-game suspension.”

Comeback by UP falls short

UAAP Season 72

UP Fighting Maroons vs. UST Growling Tigers
UST wins 93-88
Aug 20, 2009, 2pm
Araneta Coliseum

With hot shooting UST having a 31 point lead in the third quarter, the UP Fighting Maroons almost made a comeback cutting the deficit to 5 with 8 seconds left in the game, but time was not on their side as UP loses to the Growling Tigers, 93-88. Leading UP were rookie Alvin Padilla scoring 21 points and former Rookie of the Year Woody Co contributing 24 points.

Although UP lost this game, we can see that the future is bright for the UP Fighting Maroons, specially the play of Alvin Padilla, who by the way is ineligible for the Rookie of the Year honors because he is not a freshman but a transferee from San Beda. With the entry of Mike Silungan in UAAP Season 73, I think Padilla and Silungan will be a formidable combination for the fighting maroons next year.
