2009 FilOil Flying V Preseason Tournament
April 18, 2009
UP loses its 1st game in the FilOil Flying V Preseason Tournament vs. Jose Rizal University, 73-58. Leading UP were new recruits Mark Juruena and Mikee Reyes, Juruena (No. 16) was the 2008 UAAP Juniors MVP from Adamson and Mikee Reyes (No. 9) is from La Salle Greenhills. Other new recruits in the line up were Mike Silungan (Not yet eligible for this years UAAP), Carlo Gomez, Dodoy Equipilog, 6′6 Center JP Lao and Moriah Gingerich both from Davao and Alvin Padilla from San Beda.
There were times when all 5 players on the court fielded in by 2nd year Coach Aboy Castro were new recruits, and sometimes it showed by having too many errors in both offense and defense, allowing JRU to make open shots from the 3 point line. Only 7 of the 15 players in uniform where in last year’s UAAP roster, led by Magi Sison, who is also part of Smart-Gilas Philippine Team handled by Coach Toroman. Other players retained from last year were Arvin Braganza, Mike Gamboa, Mark Lopez, Woody Co, Andrew Marfori and Martin Reyes.
