FEU defeats UP, 71-59

The UP Fighting Maroons first appearance in a quarterfinal game came up short losing to the FEU Tamaraws, 71-59 in the 2010 FilOil Flying V Preseason Tournament. League leading Mike Silungan scored only 10 points as UP bowed out of the tournament and will look forward to a great season in the coming UAAP Season 73.

UP Fighting Maroons had another close game win beating UPHS 89-86 and for the 1st time in 3 years of playing in the FilOil Flying V Preseason Tournament will enter the quarterfinal round with a 5-2 record. Rookie Mike Silungan had another outstanding game with 22pts and a couple of crucial baskets in the 4th quarter.

Quarterfinals will start on June 9, the UP Men’s Basketball Team will leave for the US in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 22 for training.

Some notes from the Game:
- UP led in the 1st quarter 18-0
- Martin Reyes had another good game contributing 17pts, while in the game yesterday he scored 20pts.
- Two rookies Joshua Saret and Jett Manuel scored 7 and 4 pts respectively

With 3 rookies leading UP the last game, it was time that the veteran players step up, specially, shooting guard Martin Reyes and Woody Co, who will be playing their final year in the upcoming UAAP Season. Martin Reyes regained his shooting touch scoring 20pts and former Rookie of the year Woody Co had 15 pts. But rookie Mike Silungan still contributed a lot for the maroons with 15pts.

Rookie Nigerian Center Alinko Mbah (who is eligible to play next year in the UAAP-unless there are rule changes with the new commissioner) contributed 14pts, 9rebs, 4asts and 4stls, rookie sensation Mike Silungan scored only 13 pts but led UP in the 4th quarter and rookie point guard Joshua Saret ( scored 89pts in an NCAA juniors game last year) had 11pts, all led UP to a win vs Letran in the 2010 FilOil Flying V Preseason Tournament. Another rookie Jett Manuel from Xavier also made his appearance scoring 3 points.

UP now has a 3-2 record.

Rookie Mike Silungan scored 35 points to help the UP Fighting Maroons win over Emilio Aguinaldo College, 78-75 and won their second straight game after losing their opening game in the 2010 FilOil Flying V Preseason Tournament.

Notes from the Game:
- Mike Silungan scored 24pts in the 1st half, 13 in the 2nd qtr (5 three point shots)
- Woody Co, Magi Sison, Alvin Padilla did not play the game
- Sophomores Moriah Gingerich (2 three point shots) and Carlo Gomez each had 8 and 12pts respectively
- Rookie Martin Pascual scored 7pts
- Another Rookie Joshua Saret scored 6pts and made a clutch layup at the end game to stop the run of EAC

San Beda defeats UP 70-61

With only 7 players available in their first game, the UP Fighting Maroons gave San Beda Red Lions a scare making the game close in the last quarter but San Beda held on to win 70-61. Next UAAP Season Rookie Mike Silungan led UP with 25 points, followed by Veteran Magi Sison with 13 points and a surprise player for UP Rookie Joshua Saret with 9 points and 7 assists.

The core of the UP Fighting Maroons were missing including Woody Co, Alvin Padilla and Mikey Reyes due to an injury or school commitments.

For those who do not know, Joshua Saret was the player who broke the Juniors NCAA Record last year for points, scoring 89 points in a single game for JRU. Jett Manual is also one of the prized rookies for the UP Fighting Maroons from champion team Xavier, also missed the game.
