I was at the opening though I had to sit at the La Salle side. My brother who studies at DLSU bought the ticket for me. The Maroons looked unprepared for the nth straight season. Not since the Marvin Cruz era did they look like they knew what they were doing on court. If there’s anyone to blame, maybe we should look at Aboy Castro. I didn’t see any adjustments to the press the whole game. The offense looked stagnant and the defense was mediocre. Too many turnovers caused by the overzealous Archer defense but everyone knows they’re coming at you 100% for 40 minutes. Dindo Pumaren kept putting fresh legs in the game. At one point I saw a Maroon signal to the bench that he was tired. That reflects the conditioning the Maroons have. And Mikee Reyes, the only Maroon who seems to have the quickness and ball-handling ability (aside from Josh Saret) to break the press by himself wasn’t given another chance to help the Maroon cause. The playmaker from LSGH seemed lost as well. Let’s hope they play better come next game.
Since there’s a lot of hoopla on changing the names, we can just remove “Fighting” since we haven’t really fought for a game in over 4 years. I don’t care if we lose, just lose while leaving it all on the floor and preparing for the game well. I don’t know if we showed that in the first game.
On a positive note though – Silungan and Saret are the future of UP Basketball along with Padilla and Lopez. Throw in Angel Montecastro formerly of CSB in a year or two and our African import and things should be looking good. I hope my batchmates Woody and Martin step up more. Martin Reyes is a lights out shooter but benefits more from penetration by his teammates finding him for an open jumper. Magi Sison showed improved rebounding but is still too in love with his mid-range jump shot. Get some lay-ups and putbacks, King!
