Name Your Team Contest: Naming Rights for the New UP Mascot

Just saw this a few weeks ago, Name Your Team Contest: Naming Rights for the New UP Mascot

Do we really need to change the team name? I personally do not like to change the name, UP Fighting Maroons is what our athletes are known for but if the rumors (?) are true then we will still support our UP athletes no matter what the name is.

We do not know any details about this contest or what were the 5 Best Entries, UP Pep Rally was moved to Friday, July 9 at 6pm at the CHK Gym, maybe they will announce the winners there. See you all this friday!

  1. I completely agree. UP doesn’t need a mascot. What the Maroons are should be kept an abstract, a concept left to the individual fan to define. Further, we already have something that unites us; it is called the Oblation.

  2. Sanity fortunately prevailed. I have been following UAAP since I was a kid, even before we enrolled in the UPIS in 1976, and I’ve always known the UP team as the Maroons (the baseball teams was sometimes referred to as the Maroon Sox). Then sometime in the mid-1980′s, the adjective “Fighting” was added. 40 years later, I’ve been so used to the UP teams being referred to as the Maroons, that I cannot conceive them being called by any other monicker or nickname. Let’s just keep the nickname Maroons kasi “Maroon-nong” tayo.

  3. May psychology joke/explanation yan e, which I think is quite true. The other schools’ symbols are tangible ones, like they really have physical representation so that they can make their mascots. Sila kasi ay nasa concrete operational stage pa lang ng cognitive development kaya they must have concrete symbols as well.

Our symbol is quite abstract because we are already in in the post operational stage of the cognitive development, that is, we can already grasp abstract ideas and understand them even without physical manifestation. haha
