UAAP Season 72
UP Fighting Maroons vs. UST Growling Tigers
UST wins 95-85
Aug 8, 2009, 4pm
Araneta Coliseum
Rookie Mikee Reyes had a breakout game, scoring 21 points but could not lead UP to its second win, losing to UST, 95-85. Another tough loss for UP which led most of the first half, Woody Co, still wearing a protective mask led UP with 23 points.
UP made 13 three point shots, a season high for the maroons. UP ends the first round with a 1 win, 6 loss record, their only win coming from the no. 1 team, Ateneo. Please support our team and I know they will still improve in the second round and may surprise the other teams again.
Box Score
UST 95 – Ababou 23, Mirza 22, Teng 22, Camus 8, Bautista 7, Fortuna 4, Aytona 3, Afuang 3, Maliksi 2, Green 1.
UP 85 – Co 23, Mikee Reyes 21, Martin Reyes 17, Sison 8, Padilla 8, Lopez 3, Braganza 3, Gomez 2, Maniego 0, De Asis 0.
As compared to other seasons, LUMALABAN na talaga ang team! Bihira na lang yung mga 20+ na tambak. Improvement talaga. Pero yun nga, we could’ve gotten a better record for this round if not for untimely breakdowns in some of our games.
U-nibersidad ng Pilipinas!
Conquer the 2nd round!!!
sobrang heartbreaker, but we just won’t give up on believing that the team can and will win.
they should never give up on believing as well. konting tiyaga pa in keeping and holding to their intensity all throughout the game. definitely getting better, but we can prove that we are better than them.
kudos to Woody Co and Martin Reyes for a superb game. And MIkee Reyes did well in this career high game, kaya lang there were a lot of poor decisions made on his part sa game kanina.
Let’s go UP!
The game was really a heart breaker. But I’m proud to say that our team improved a lot. They’ve shown from their last games especially this and our game against UE that playing with UP is not just another game ball to take but a very challenging one. Medyo nawawala lang sa focus and there were wrong decisions made by our players especially when to make a high percentage shot, but i guess it’s not that easy in their part.
There’s still another round to take…Lets go UP!
**our team shoots very well today…hope they can keep it up
….meron na kong bagong crush sa kanila =p
Galing ng dalawang team kahapon, pero astig talaga improvement ng Maroons game after game. Maswerte lang talaga kalaban during end game situations (Mirza’s trey was a dagger!). Eto lang observations ko:
- all-throughout the game very sloppy passes ng team… ang dami nating turnovers while bringing up the ball kasi soft yung mga looping passes natin when we try to break the press. Pati pag half-court set, napansin ko lang medyo malamya yung mga pasa natin.
- Alvin Padilla needs to be patient. Nung kalmado pa cya nung 1st quarter and ganda ng laro nya, pero nung second half non-existent, nawala yung kumpiyansa. Magaling na bata pero maiinitin ang ulo. I can see him as our go-to-guy in clutch situations but he needs to keep his cool.
- Magi has to be a force inside the paint. Jerry Codiñera was one of the best post players in the PBA and should learn a lot from him.
Malakas ang team at kayang kaya nyo talunin kahit sinong team sa UAAP. Good luck sa second round!!!
UP FIGHT!
End game supremacy…
Sayang the last three losses are due to lapses towards the end of the games..
May second round pa.. 7 more games to win!
Let the Maroons dominate!
UP Fight!
Heartbreaking. But the last three games only prove one thing–we are the most dangerous team to go up against. I think round to will see us a better team.
keep the defense holding until the last stretch of the game. dun lang naman tayo nasusulutan eh. but the way our players are fighting is a testament that indeed they have grown and matured. lalo na next season. pero wag na nating hintayin yun! ngayon na!
great work Coach Aboy, his staff and the players!
I hope some of the guys playing and even the coaching staff are reading this. Below are some of my observations on the team:
1. Please.. please.. please… practice those free throw shots. Take 50 a day if necessary. The team is small and this is part of the game that small guys can easily learn.
2. Stop taking so many threes. If the shooting percentage is already down, please take a drive. I know there are great shooters in the team but when the percentage is already down take a drive and hopefully you can take some confidence from here. The team will become less predictable this way as well. This might also lead to my first point which is free throws.
3. Coach Aboy, please create more plays. I just notice that there are very very low plays being set in place for our “go to guys” like Co and Padilla especially on a. This is important in order to avoid a collapse and enable the team not to or at least lessen panic during must score situations.
I am happy that the team is improving but I also know that this is college basketball. In a year or two, the team will have new faces again so improvements and a system must be in place in a shorter span of time. Good luck guys!
