Comeback by UP falls short

UAAP Season 72

UP Fighting Maroons vs. UST Growling Tigers
UST wins 93-88
Aug 20, 2009, 2pm
Araneta Coliseum

With hot shooting UST having a 31 point lead in the third quarter, the UP Fighting Maroons almost made a comeback cutting the deficit to 5 with 8 seconds left in the game, but time was not on their side as UP loses to the Growling Tigers, 93-88. Leading UP were rookie Alvin Padilla scoring 21 points and former Rookie of the Year Woody Co contributing 24 points.

Although UP lost this game, we can see that the future is bright for the UP Fighting Maroons, specially the play of Alvin Padilla, who by the way is ineligible for the Rookie of the Year honors because he is not a freshman but a transferee from San Beda. With the entry of Mike Silungan in UAAP Season 73, I think Padilla and Silungan will be a formidable combination for the fighting maroons next year.

UP gets back at NU

UAAP Season 72

UP Fighting Maroons vs. NU Bulldogs
UP wins 78-76
Aug 15, 2009, 2pm
Araneta Coliseum

UP Fighting Maroons
wins its first game in the second round by defeating the NU bulldogs, 78-76 avenging their big loss to NU in 1st round. Miggy Maniego led UP in the 1st half with 15 points and Martin Reyes took over in the second half with 15 of his 17 points.

NU had the chance to send the game into overtime with UP leading by 3 points but UP opted to foul in the dying seconds, not giving NU a chance to make a 3 point shot just like in the overtime loss of UP to UE.

I hope UP continues this and gets back to all teams that defeated them in the first round. UP Fight!

Please support our Team Pilipinas

Please support our Powerade Team Pilipinas Basketball Team tomorrow for their knockout game vs Jordan at 2pm in the FIBA Asia Qualifiers. I know many have criticized this team, but whichever team plays (powerade or smart gilas), we should all support Philippine basketball.

From my analysis, the only way we can beat Jordan is making our three point shots and having even just a decent defensive strategy specially for their big men. But I believe we have the players to beat them and make it to the semifinals. Good luck tomorrow!

Go Team Pilipinas!

UAAP Season 72

UP Fighting Maroons vs. University of the East Red Warriors
UE wins 77-69
Aug 6, 2009, 2pm
Araneta Coliseum

UP had a chance to seal the win in regulation, but Rookie Alvin Padilla missed 1 of 2 free throws with UP leading by 3 points with 9 seconds left. Then Acuna of UE beat the buzzer with a 3 point shot and tied the game at 65, sending the game into overtime.

In the extra period, it was all UE as veteran Elmer Espiritu took over the game, leading UE to a 77-69 win over the maroons. Woody Co led UP with 23 points, but could not lead UP to its second win and ties NU and Adamson at the bottom of the standings.

Although the loss is heartbreaking, it was a big improvement from last year, specially versus UE, where they lost to UE by 30 points. Hoping UP bounces back this saturday against UST for their final game of the 1st round. Game time will be 4pm at the Araneta Coliseum.
