Comeback by UP falls short

UAAP Season 72

UP Fighting Maroons vs. UST Growling Tigers
UST wins 93-88
Aug 20, 2009, 2pm
Araneta Coliseum

With hot shooting UST having a 31 point lead in the third quarter, the UP Fighting Maroons almost made a comeback cutting the deficit to 5 with 8 seconds left in the game, but time was not on their side as UP loses to the Growling Tigers, 93-88. Leading UP were rookie Alvin Padilla scoring 21 points and former Rookie of the Year Woody Co contributing 24 points.

Although UP lost this game, we can see that the future is bright for the UP Fighting Maroons, specially the play of Alvin Padilla, who by the way is ineligible for the Rookie of the Year honors because he is not a freshman but a transferee from San Beda. With the entry of Mike Silungan in UAAP Season 73, I think Padilla and Silungan will be a formidable combination for the fighting maroons next year.

Box Score

UST 93 – Ababou 23, Bautista 17, Fortuna 14, Teng 13, Mirza 13, Camus 8, Maliksi 3, Afuang 2, Ungria 0, Green 0, Cam 0, Aytona 0.

UP 88 – Co 24, Padilla 21, Lopez 18, Mikee Reyes 5, Sison 4, De Asis 4, Gomez 3, Gamboa 3, Martin Reyes 2, Gingerich 2, Braganza 2, Maniego 0, Hipolito 0, Juruena 0, Astorga 0.

  1. We will have to wait but I’m sure it’ll be worth it! Now, if only my former high school can do something about the team.

I’m thinking of suggesting supporting them as a batch project. Hmmm….

  2. I just wanna share the following when I watched the replay inspite of watching it live. Hehehe

    * We had a terrible first half (27 points) but we made a run from the lead of USTe as high as 31 points.
    * We made history (again) for the team scoring most in the second half. 61 effing points!
    * Our free throws still suck :( Had we made the free throws from the third quarter to the fourth or I should say if we have been making our free throws in our last games then I think we would have more than 2 wins :p
    * UST made 8 back-to-back TO’s in the third quarter
    * Speaking of those TO’s, yung 11 na TO’s, UP made 16 points out of it.
    * With 2 minutes left, the score was 77-88.
    * We shot 13 3 pts, this season’s highest. (please confirm)
    * 40 bench points ang UP

    Padilla – 21 points, 9 rebounds
    Lopez – 16 points, 10 rebounds

FROM THE COMMENTATORS (Eric Tipan and TJ Manotoc)

    - It seems like a switch (for USTe) was turned off when UP started its run.
    - It’s like space jam — they sucked the power out of UST.
    - (TJ) I gotta say this, win or lose, the UP team really gives the UAAP fans a fun game…
    - This is one of the most hard-fought amazing comeback
    - If the game can be extended by 30 seconds, UP would have won :-)
    - They didn’t beat Ateneo for nothing.
